Each of the children survived horrors. Each lost relatives in the strikes that injured them. All have struggled with the emotions of what they went through and what they face ahead.
The evacuees make up only a tiny fraction of the thousands of civilians, including children, who have suffered grievous injuries over the course of Israel’s monthslong campaign against Hamas and its bombardment of Gaza.
Nariman El-Mofty biography
Nariman El-Mofty is a freelance documentary photographer and photojournalist.
After years of photo editing, in addition to photographing for the Associated Press Middle East photo desk, Nariman became a staff photojournalist.
In 2019, she was part of an Associated Press team that won the Pulitzer Prize for international reporting for work uncovering the effects of Yemen's devastating war. She also received the Overseas Press Club’s Olivier Rebbot Award for her Yemen photo reportage. She was awarded the Robert Capa Citation for Excellence for Disembarking in Hell, documenting the dangerous journey of Ethiopian migrants crossing the sea to Yemen and then making their way to Saudi Arabia.
In 2020, she traveled to the Sudanese-Ethiopian border to photograph the Tigray people who take shelter by the thousands within sight of the homeland they fled in northern Ethiopia. The resulting work, Fleeing War, received a Robert Capa Gold Medal Award in 2020 and was exhibited at the Visa Pour L’Image Festival in Perpignan, France, in 2021.
El-Mofty was part of an AP team covering Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography for its heart-wrenching visual coverage of the horrors of the Russia-Ukraine war since the start of the war in February 2022.
Most recently, El-Mofty has been a contributor to The New York Times and is working on long-term projects, as well as being part of judging panels and mentoring.
