"Sideshow" is an ongoing street photography project initiated by Chris Harrison in October 2016. It revolves around exploring his hometown of Brighton without preconceived expectations, evolving into an exercise in pushing the boundaries of curiosity and receptivity. Often traversing the same routes repeatedly, it delves into the depths of repetition.
Born out of a desire for personal creative expression and autonomy, Chris, a seasoned graphic design and brand consultant of 30 years, sought a break from the commercial demands of his profession. Embracing the street as a dynamic canvas of ever-changing elements, he finds allure in the challenge of crafting something intriguing from the random flux of surroundings.
Initially, Brighton wasn't the project's focal point; rather, Chris aimed to capture captivating shots within its confines. However, as the project progressed, Brighton's essence began to emerge, albeit in unexpected ways.
A friend, witnessing the project's evolution, remarked that viewing its images alters one's perception of Brighton forever – a sentiment Chris embraces, aspiring to redefine his own view of the city with each outing.
"Sideshow" also highlights Brighton's "low season," characterised by a melancholic ambiance during the colder months. Chris finds this period particularly inspiring, relishing the unique encounters with light, space, and subdued colours, which infuse the winter shots with a distinct tone of pathos.
